Cross-Sectional Study Suggests Invisalign Invisible Braces Benefit Gum Health

Dental specialists are still split between the traditional braces and invisible braces. As one of the providers of Invisalign in Toronto, the team at The Art of Dentistry has experienced firsthand the benefits of this orthodontic procedure.

Teeth straightening has long been one of the most widely accessed dental services in Canada. With science and technology advancing the way dental care is approached and performed, metallic braces have been surpassed by the elegant and innovative invisible braces. Invisalign is potentially the most well-known brand and by now, everyone looking to straighten their smile is aware of the benefits, such as flexibility of taking them out, their effectiveness and discreetness. But there may be even more.

Study looked at oral hygiene and Invisalign patients’ satisfaction

A cross-sectional study of 100 patients published in BMC Oral Health has looked at the ability of patients to perform proper oral hygiene with fixed braces versus Invisalign. The results suggest that the latter orthodontic treatment allowed for faster and easier teeth cleaning, and simultaneously patients recorded improved gingival health and a higher quality of life overall.

The study also showed that fixed braces increase plaque accumulation which leads to inflammation and greater susceptibility to caries and cavities. When the researchers looked at the impact on quality of life overall, greater impact on speech impairments and eating habits was also highlighted in the fixed braces patient group, while the Invisalign one reported less suffering from laughing inhibitions and little or no changes in eating habits.

What do specialists say?

Dental specialists are still split between the traditional braces and invisible braces. As one of the providers of Invisalign in Toronto, the team at The Art of Dentistry has experienced firsthand the benefits of this orthodontic procedure. Discussing the findings of the study, key representative recently stated, “This research is of extreme importance particularly because even though Invisalign has been widely available to patients for over 2 decades, not many studies have looked into the differences between it and fixed orthodontic appliances when it comes to good oral hygiene habits and impact on everyday life. Even though it was not a large scale study, the results are incredibly promising and the fact that Invisalign patients’ satisfaction was clearly much higher and their general oral health was better just goes to show the true potential of this treatment and the need for more research into this area. We welcome these findings and they are very consistent with our experience.”
