Craftsvilla.com provides a platform for the poor and deprived

“Craftsvilla.com is India’s largest online ethnic store.”
Plans to introduce payback commission model to acquire 1000 artisans from rural India.

Craftsvilla.com, India’s largest ethnic online store, is all set to grow their vendor base. By the end of the first quarter of 2016, the company aims to grow the vendor base by 10%. This growth plan involves the introduction of a payback commission model. Which in turn will help acquire a minimum of 1000 deprived artisans from rural India. This will open up a number of opportunities for the artisans as it gives access to the millions of consumers of the brand.

“This is a negative commission, not a positive commission, there are a lot of underprivileged sellers who we want to bring onto the platform, this will be an incentive for them to join the platform,” said Manoj Gupta, co founder of Craftsvilla.com. There are a number of highly talented artisans who will benefit from this.

How the system will work: If an item costs INR 100 on the Craftsvilla.com, in addition to the selling price, an approximate commission of INR 5 could be added to it, ensuring an underprivileged seller would get Rs 105 for the product. While the amount might a small amount for the buyer it will be an exciting incentive for the seller. The target is to get atleast 1000 artisans in the next 9 months including women artisans from Kutch (Gujarat, India), tribal artisans from Chattisgarh, West Bengal and other parts of rural India.

The firm already follows a zero commission model for NGOs which has been in effect since mid 2015. Around 50 NGOs including Foot & Mouth artists, Anwesha tribal arts and crafts are currently a part of Craftvilla’s 25,000+ seller database. “Our bread and butter is our 25,000 sellers, the next level of growth comes from differentiated supply, so this is a strategic move to increase differentiated supply,” adds Gupta who started the company in 2011.
