“Co-Parents from Hell”: Mara Berke’s Los Angeles Lawyer Magazine Article Offers Much Needed Support

Family law attorney LA’s Mara Berke often represents co-parents in conflict that need help to make parenting decisions with the other parent before, during, and after the divorce process. Ms. Berke’s recent article with Licensed Marriage Family Therapist Ria Severance in the latest edition of Los Angeles Lawyer offers important support for struggling co-parents. The authors explain important tips for parenting communication to buffer children from stress, offer insight into how parents can most effectively prioritize their children’s needs—all despite conflict and power struggles with their co-parent.

Intervention and support for families is key from the beginning of the divorce process. “My goal is to help families and their children as they navigate the divorce process and offer resources early on to assist them,” said Ms. Berke, who brings a unique background to family law with her dual degrees, a JD from Loyola Law School, and a masters of social work with a families and children concentration from USC.

Family law attorneys are often first responders to a divorce, and co-parenting issues should be addressed quickly for the benefit of the family. Working right away with experienced, co-parenting therapists is useful when there is unresolved conflict. Ms. Berke explains, “Divorces involving children are often complicated and typically require careful and strategic consideration. Professional collaboration with experienced and skilled clinicians, such as Ria Severance, and lawyers who understand the divorce dynamics is essential for clients.”

The article gives often overlooked advice that parents and their attorneys can follow when a co-parenting conflict is toxic in an effort to not stunt their children’s development and assist quickly in order to help prevent issues, and this help can last long after the divorce. The article is the Closing Argument column in Los Angeles Lawyer, March 2022 edition, page 30. Ms. Berke sits on the editorial board for the magazine.
