Composer Hanan Townshend debuts music for ‘The Book of Vision’ at the first major film event to hold a physical edition since the onset of the COVID 19 pandemic.

The movie opens the 35th Venice International Film Critics’ Week on September 3, in Italy.

Terrence Malick enlists Hanan to score the soundtrack to the film that mirrors the fears, dreams, and hopes of people everywhere since the onset of COVID 19.

Los Angeles, CA – Sep 2, 2020 – Composer Hanan Townshend premieres a new score for Carlo Hintermannvand’s directorial debut, a film produced by Terrence Malick. “The Book of Vision” will open the 35th Venice International Film Critics’ Week in Italy on September 3.

The film premiere marks the first major international film event to hold a physical edition since the onset of the COVID 19 pandemic.

The new film has been called a thrilling time jumping journey. The sonic backdrop is a colorful tapestry of sound with one major theme, “Hope.”

“COVID 19 ushered in an uncertain era. it may seem comforting to hide in our homes and allow fear and anxiety to overwhelm us. This film faces the reality of life and death, our hopes and fears, inspiring us to live life to the fullest,” says Townshend of the spiritual journey that blurs the line between science and spirituality.

The film’s international cast includes Charles Dance (“Game of Thrones”), Lotte Verbeek (“Outlander,” “The Borgias”), Sverrir Gudnason (“Borg vs McEnroe”), Isolda Dychauk (“The Borgias,” “Faust”) and Italian actor Filippo Nigro.

The film follows Eva, a promising young doctor who leaves her brilliant career to study the History of Medicine at a remote university. After finding The Book of Vision, she begins to call everything into question: her nature, her body, her illness, and her sealed fate. The book is a manuscript that sweeps past and present, blending them into a never-ending vortex.

Far from a traditional scientific text, the book, written by Dr. Anmuth, contains the hopes, fears, and dreams of more than 1800 patients. The story of Anmuth and his patients inspires Eva to live her life to the fullest. “Nothing expires in its time. Only what you desire is real, not merely what happens.”

Townshend’s score seamlessly uses pre-recorded arrangements and improvisations to take audiences through a deeply emotional musical experience that flutters between rationality and spirituality.

“Carlo Hintermannvand created a collage-like score that weaves through different worlds of the film. The score is built around the saxophone, often riffing off inspiring classical pieces from the likes of Brahms and Liszt”, says Townshend.

“Compositionally, the original work is an extension of this world, blending clarinet, saxophone ensemble, and strings to enhance the mystical, woody soundscape. Federico Pascucci’s additions to the score also bring a lovely romantic heartbeat,” adds the New Zealand born musician.

In an era of uncertainty and fear, ‘The Book of Vision’ captures the complexity of the human experience. Townshend is known for scoring Terrence Malick’s “The Tree of Life”, “Knight of Cups”, and “To the Wonder.”
