In September of 2018, Lindo Park School saw some new construction on campus, but not the type you’d expect to see at an elementary school. Planter boxes were built, filled with dirt, and now have hundreds of happy students prepared to tend to flowers, vegetables, and other plants in the new Lindo Park School Community Garden. The garden took the hands of many to complete, but the finished product is well worth it as it adds a pleasing aesthetic and opportunity for learning to the school.

The vision of a community garden at Lindo Park was thought up to complement the school’s existing orchard. This highly-anticipated project was supported by the entire community with funds and labor donated by the community including staff, parents, PTA, Lakeside Optimists, Lakeside Gardening Club, Compound Solutions, and crew members from the USS Gabrielle Gifford. These individuals, companies, and groups coming together to build such an incredible garden shows how vital schools are the unity of a community.

Students from Lindo Park Elementary also played a role in the building of the garden, as they helped fill raised garden beds with soil and plant different types of vegetation in the planters. Their hard work building the garden has added color and beauty to the campus and will be a staple in student’s science learning year round. While building the garden, students also had the chance to learn about pollinators and using worms to create compost with the Lindo Lake Park Ranger. As the year progresses, teachers can use the gardens for hands-on experiences with their students during Life Science units of study.
