Closing the Literacy Gap with the Local Barbershop

Columbia, S.C. EveryLibrary announces an exciting new literacy program with a Columbia, South Carolina based non-profit called Books With Barbers to collect and distribute books and reading materials focused on African American children and youth to be used in 6 Macon, Georgia barber shops as a pilot program to address the literacy gap for boys, young men, and their families. EveryLibrary is facilitating donations of books and soliciting funds for Books with Barbers to create “literacy stations” in these barber shops which will include a range of reading materials for young readers. This pilot program kicked off in Macon, GA during the week of December 16th with RazorLine Barbershop serving as the first site.

“Children must learn to read before they can read to learn,” said Books with Barbers founder Jasmine Mix. “Our mission is to close the literacy gap for early readers… by making access to reading materials as easy as a trip to their barber shop.” A graduate of North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, Ms. Mix has served as Secretary for the North Carolina Association of Educators, President of Kappa Delta Pi, and has served on the School Leadership Committee for Richland County School District 2 in Columbia, SC. “Books with Barbers is happy to partner with EveryLibrary to help pilot this unique program and bring Macon families a valuable and unique literacy experience,” adds Ms. Mix.

Books with Barbers is a high-impact program that puts reading in a very effective place,” says Brian Hart, Director of Special Projects for EveryLibrary. “Having shop owners extend their commitment to their communities with access to basic literacy for young boys and their families is a great way to help children be school-ready and to further develop reading skills.”

EveryLibrary and Books with Barbers are proud to pilot the Books with Barbers “literacy stations” program with Macon, Georgia communities. Interested individuals can find out more at http://action.everylibrary.org/sign_up_to_donate_books_to_books_with_barbers_initiative
