CINEMA SCANDINAVIA REVIEWS ‘A 2ND CHANCE’ – SUSANNE BIER AT HER FINEST

“A 2ND CHANCE // ROCK SALT RELEASING”
One hell of an emotional roller coaster journey, ‘A 2ND CHANCE’ is a riveting tale that weaves together love, sacrifice, morality, parenthood, and so much more.

Los Angeles, CA – August 17, 2018 –

“You could say this drama-thriller is absolutely haunting—hauntingly good and not to be missed.” – Cinema Scandinavia.

Directed by Oscar-winning and Emmy-nominated Susanne Bier (The Night Manager) and starring HBO Game of Thrones’ Jamie Lannister, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, A 2ND CHANCE brings both the Scandinavian director and actor back to their Danish roots for this high-concept and dark Nordic noir. “This is Bier at her finest with sweeping landscape shots intertwined with close-ups of the actors’ eyes and hands. She not only lingers on the raw emotion of Andreas but also focuses many times on the baby’s innocent face and alternates between a well-balanced palette of cold and warm tones,” reviewed Cinema Scandinavia.

Written by Anders Thomas Jensen, a longtime collaborator with Bier best known for their 2010 Academy-Award winning feature, In A Better World, inflicts the similar gripping theme of tragedy and grief in A 2ND CHANCE. “Anders Thomas Jensen has crafted a masterful script that takes us on one hell of an emotional roller coaster journey. He’s managed to weave a riveting tale encompassing family, love, parenthood, sacrifice, loss, power, corruption, morality, and so much more,” continued Cinema Scandinavia.

Film summary from Cinema Scandinavia: Andreas (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau), a police detective who loses his seven-week old baby in what appears to be sudden infant death syndrome and switches the baby with a known junkie’s baby in an attempt to stop his wife (Maria Bonnevie) from killing herself. Her mental illness proves to be too much and she still ends up taking her life and the film looks into how Andreas deals with the aftermath. “As gut wrenching as many of the scenes were (especially both couples’ revelation of their dead babies and their struggle to cope with it), nothing ever felt forced or indulgent and Bier is a master at capturing such natural, subtle performances from her cast,” raved Cinema Scandinavia.

In collaboration with Trustnordisk and production companies, Zentropa, Zentropa International Sweden, FilmFyn and Film I Vast, A 2nd CHANCE evokes painstaking agony with its almost unfathomable scenes, darkly capturing the reality of child neglect, drug abuse, and the weight of a moral decision many adults battle everyday. “Andreas does something so unthinkable yet almost justified because he loves his wife and we can’t help but still feel he’s honourable in his actions as the film explores the blurred ethical line of right and wrong,” observed Cinema Scandinavia.

A 2nd CHANCE is about real people forced into incredibly difficult circumstances, leaving viewers to confront their personal notions about right and wrong, leaving us with the question: Who are we to think we are better than anyone else? “I still find myself thinking about the film and the ethical dilemmas posed by it before I fall asleep. You could say this drama-thriller is absolutely haunting—hauntingly good and not to be missed,” concluded Cinema Scandinavia.

“Anchored by a phenomenal performance by Coster-Waldau” (Oblivion, Mama), A 2ND CHANCE features a “powerful performance” by award-winning Swedish actress, Maria Bonnevie (I Am Dina). The role of the junkie and girlfriend to the ex-con is model and debuting actress, Lykke May Andersen who gives a “compelling performance […] and a truly unforgettable debut.” Alongside, A 2ND CHANCE features knockout performances from Ulrich Thomsen (The Blacklist), Roland Moller (Atomic Blonde), Nikolai Lie Kaas (Angels & Demons) and Peter Harber (The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo).
