Chapters Capistrano Identifies Subtle Warning Signs of Alcohol Use Disorders

Not all signs of problems with alcohol are strikingly obvious, says Chapters Capistrano, and it’s important not to overlook less noticeable ones.

There are many people who can have a drink now and then with friends or at dinner and never develop an addiction problem, but others are not so fortunate. Because drinking has become such a norm in society, it can be easy for people to be in denial about how much they drink or the problems it’s causing. California rehab center Chapters Capistrano has released a statement to the press regarding signs of problematic drinking and the importance of seeking treatment.

“Nowadays it’s not unusual to see people drinking,” says Susie Shea, co-owner of the luxury drug and alcohol treatment center near Los Angeles. “But this makes it even more imperative that people are aware of the warning signs of alcohol use disorders. There are those who are very good at hiding or denying their drinking problems and they can go overlooked for years leading to more serious problems.”

Not everyone who struggles with alcoholism falls into the stereotype of someone who is stumbling around or always drunk, notes Shea. Many are very high functioning and hold down steady jobs and have nice homes and loving families. According to a recent article in Bustle, “Over 30 percent of Americans have either abused alcohol or suffered from alcoholism at some point in their adult lives. One of the reasons this disease is so hard to diagnose is because there are many different shades of it – and even more gray areas.”

One warning sign of problematic drinking is that the person always finds a reason to have a drink. Whether they’re at a birthday party, picnic, bowling, or other social gathering, alcohol makes its way there. If there’s not alcohol involved, they may leave early or be itching for a chance to step out and get a drink. And once they start drinking, they may have trouble controlling how much they drink as one or two drinks turns into many more.

They also may downplay how much they drink, says Shea. They spend time drinking alone, come up with other excuses for their questionable actions or absence, or make light of their drinking habits. They may become very good at drinking in secret or appearing to be okay when really they’re intoxicated.

A decline in health is another warning sign. This could include unexplained weight loss or gain, sleeping problems, heart or digestive problems, bloated face, and dry or reddened skin. Alcohol can weaken the immune system as well and decrease proper absorption of nutrients leaving people more susceptible to illness. Poor health not explained by other causes can be a red flag.

“If you notice these symptoms or others that make you worry about a loved one’s drinking, speak up,” says Shea. “Let them know that you’re concerned about their wellbeing and help is available. If you’re not sure how to get them help, or they’re defensive, talk to a professional about staging an intervention and getting them into a treatment facility. At Chapters Capistrano, we’ll work with you along each step of the way to get your loved one into rehab and on the path to recovery. Don’t ignore the signs of addiction problems because you never know when it will be too late.”
