What would you give up today for a better tomorrow? Many individuals give up the only world they know to give their families a better tomorrow. Spanning more than one hundred years, Pursuing a Better Tomorrow: From Spain to the United States is an inspiring cross-generational memoir that portrays the history of three generations in their journey from Spain to the US. The novel transports readers to a time long forgotten with a readable historical overview of the Taíno, the conquistadors, early settlers, the Spanish Empire, and the Dominican Republic, interspersed within the narrative through the perspective of a character from the era. De La Rosa candidly shares her coming-of-age story as she transitions from New York City’s projects to corporate America. Despite facing a myriad of challenges, De La Rosa achieved the American Dream, living a life filled with untold blessings and opportunities.
“I’ve often wondered what my life would have been like if we had not immigrated to the United States. When I visit the beautiful yet impoverished island of the Dominican Republic and see the need and want in the eyes of some of the people, I think, “That could have been me,” says author Blanca De La Rosa. Born in the Dominican Republic, De La Rosa grew up in New York during a time before the Hispanic population developed the supportive Latino community which exists today. Although she struggled without support in her cultural and linguistic transition, De La Rosa graduated from Pace University with a Bachelor’s Degree in International Business Management.
In addition, even with the odds stacked overwhelmingly against her, De La Rosa succeeded in establishing a successful 34-year career, rising through the ranks of Mobil/ExxonMobil Oil Corporation. In her time moving up the corporate ladder, De La Rosa developed her own model for success, learning through trial and error and believing in herself and her abilities. “I feel extremely blessed and grateful for everything that I have been able to obtain and accomplish. It’s my sincere hope and desire that my words will help and inspire others to believe in their abilities, dare to dream, and reach for the stars because achieving the American dream is possible.” Now, after all her time in the industry, De La Rosa says her most rewarding role has been serving as a mentor to the young employees in her company – guiding them through the corporate maze.
Whether De La Rosa is maneuvering between national history or personal history in the book, she is always simple, subtle, and compellingly visual. To tell a cohesive narrative with such an expansive scope is impressive enough as it is; to do so with the poise and precision that De La Rosa wields in her writing is something else entirely. The common thread of pursuing a better future runs aptly throughout each story but takes a different shape, as the characters overcome different obstacles in different places at different times.
Pursuing a Better Tomorrow offers a textured and nuanced account of history through the lens of one family that offers far more universal insight on things like immigration, personal growth, and historical trauma. Imbued with striking emotionality and conveyed with impeccable storytelling, the book is available for sale on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Apple iBooks and Google Play.
