BIER’S BABY-SNATCHING DRAMA, ‘A 2ND CHANCE’ POSES SHOCKING MORAL DILEMMAS

“A 2ND CHANCE // ROCK SALT RELEASING”
Film Inquiry reviews Nikolaj Coster-Waldau like never before in Susanne Bier’s heart-wrenching, Nordic noir – ‘A 2nd CHANCE’ – a film that questions how far someone will go when their life is hanging by a thread.

Los Angeles, CA – September 6, 2018Some of the second chances serve to highlight a character’s latent or concealed internal struggles from which they can no longer run away from or hide,” wrote Film Inquiry, Darryl A. Armstrong.

Each well-known for their world on In a Better World (2010) Susanne Bier […] “partnered again here with frequent writer and collaborator Anders Thomas Jensen for this story that continuously upends expectations throughout its running time.” As a gritty, Scandi-noir, A 2ND CHANCE (En chance til) delves deep into human nature’s battle against tragedy and the lengths parents will go for innocent children.

Film Inquiry summarized, A 2ND CHANCE follows Detective “Andreas [Nikolaj Coster-Waldau], Anna, and their baby boy’s lives are mirrored by Tristan, a drug dealer who can’t seem to get his life together, and his girlfriend Sanne, a drug addict, and their own baby. Andreas encounters this couple during a routine police call and finds their child in a state of horrific neglect. It’s as traumatizing a scene as in any body horror film and sets the stage for the story to come.” But, when the lines between right and wrong become blurred, “through tears of grief, [Andreas] makes a shocking and life-altering decision. From this point, the film takes a number of twists and turns.”

A 2ND CHANCE is high-concept Nordic noir for its gruesome depiction of child neglect and ability to capture the bone-chilling atmosphere, which bestow areas of gray onto the adult moral complex and prevails its imminent implications. “This sort of character development – that asks the story’s characters to wrestle with their own internal struggles – is a refreshing change of pace. The audience is given room to digest not just the action, but reflect on why the characters make the decisions they do, and how those decisions affect their own lives and the lives of those around them – both personally and professionally. This is exactly the type of character development that is so often never given an original thought, let alone a second one.”

Known worldwide for his masculine and physical role as ‘Jamie Lannister’ in HBO’s Game of Thrones, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau is “a surprisingly tender protagonist” as Detective Andreas, with “few fatherly scenes with children – both his own and other’s –that are among some of the best I have ever seen. Coster-Waldau is impressive in a role that requires the audience to believe he has the capacity to be a physically intimidating force to those who signal danger, and a gentle, caring giant to the most vulnerable of characters.”

Unraveling into absolute moral and ethical disarray, A 2nd CHANCE successfully captures the extreme horrors of child neglect, baby snatching and adult decision making in a new, thrilling way cinema rarely experiences. “A 2ND CHANCE manages to pose a shocking moral quandary without falling into an academic exercise as a thought experiment by grounding its characters in real feelings, taking seriously the ways we go about rationalizing the decisions we make to ourselves after we have made them.”
