We spoke to Trish, the designer and seamstress that creates these Messenger bags. For the last 15-20 years she and her husband have done lots of temporary work at Bethel. Currently they are working with the LDC program.
Trish tells us they have known Tom and Nanci, the owners of Best Life Gifts in Pine Bush, New York for many years. In fact, they even got to work together in Warwick, NY for two years, building the new World Head Quarters of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Furthermore, Trish and her husband Sean, actually helped with some remodeling of the BestLife Gift store in Pinebush, New York, before it opened.
Trish continues, “I’ve been a fabric artist, working in many aspects of fabric design for 40 years. Nanci was looking for someone to make affordable fabric messenger bags for the friends. So I designed a messenger bag. It’s a little bigger than a magazine. And it includes a clear pocket to hold your tablet. I also make a small version that would also work well for kids to use in the Ministry.”
What makes your messenger bag special? Trish goes on to say, “These are not made in a factory. Instead, each of them is hand made. I am a fabric artist and designer, so I love color and mixing patterns. I have incorporated that idea into these bags. So, no two of my messenger bags are alike. Each and everyone is unique. They come in many colors and patterns just like a piece of artwork. I also make some of them out of oil cloth. This is a heavier vinyl material that allows the messenger bags to be used in the ministry no matter what the weather is like outside.”
What do you love most about creating these messenger bags for the friends? Trish goes on to tell us she loves to sew and loves the creativity of making each bag differently. “In addition,” she adds, “I want the friends who buy them to enjoy using them. To have something truly unique,” she adds, “In making the smaller bags, we were also thinking about the Mothers or grandmothers that want to buy their children or grandkids a souvenir from their trip to Bethel. We wanted an affordable bag that they could bring home as a gift. I love the idea of these kids using my bags in the ministry.”
