Fortune Business Insights states that the global AI agents market was valued at $8.03 billion in 2025 and is expected to grow at a staggering 46.61% CAGR to $251.38 billion by 2034. North America currently holds the largest market share at 38%, thanks to strong adoption by businesses in the technology, finance, healthcare, and retail sectors. For example, the Belitsoft AI agent development firm created an AI-assisted Chrome plugin for an e-commerce business to help the company train staff on best practices and reduce high employee turnover.
The Role of the Developer Is Changing
What happens to the people who build and run these systems in 2026 may be the biggest change of all. According to IDC’s FutureScape 2026 report, 80% of developers will work with autonomous AI agents by 2030. This will change their job from code writer to planner and orchestrator.
IDC says that by 2027, 35% of professional developers will use vibe coding platforms (natural language-driven development) to make apps that are ready for use. The development lifecycle is being redesigned to support collaboration between people and AI.
InformationWeek reports that businesses are moving away from glue code, which is manual and fragile scripts that connect different parts, and toward standardized agentic primitives. Building the agent’s brain is not as important as making the tools those agents use clear and available to the public through well-documented APIs.
Voice AI Accelerates Toward Mainstream
A lot is changing about how we use AI. According to CB Insights, voice AI development is the fastest-growing area of the generative AI industry at present. Businesses are getting ready for the day when people will talk to AI instead of typing.
Voice agents are improving at handling complicated, multi-turn conversations in customer service, sales, and IT support without any help from humans. And the market is paying attention. In 2025, Meta acquired two voice AI startups, Play AI and WaveForms. AI is sending a clear message that the consolidation of industries is speeding up.
This means that developers need to create agents that can understand not only words but also tone, context, and intent. The bar is rising quickly.
The M&A Wave Hits Agentic AI
Speaking of consolidation, it appears that 2026 will be a significant year for agent acquisitions. According to CB Insights, AI agent solutions were the most popular AI exit deals in the first quarter of 2025. There have already been more than 35 purchases in the AI agent and copilot market.
Enterprise buyers are increasingly looking to build comprehensive agentic solutions to gain a competitive advantage. This means that if you are building a startup in this space, you are not just competing for customers – you are competing for acquisition attention. And if you are an enterprise evaluating vendors, you need to consider whether your chosen platform will still exist independently in 12 months.
The Profit Margin Squeeze Is Here
The bad news is that it costs increasingly more to make AI agents. CB Insights states that the summer of vibe coding is ending because companies are having to deal with the high costs of inference.
Reasoning models have led to a significant increase in token usage, sometimes by 20 times. This is forcing companies like Cursor (which hit $500 million in ARR) and Lovable ($100 million ARR) to implement rate limits and price increases.
What is the lesson for developers? You can no longer ignore unit economics. Companies that win will be those that do not just look for the best people, but also the best way to save money. According to CB Insights, the most capital-efficient agent startups make $1.4 million per employee, which is almost 2.5 times the average for the category.
Agent Monitoring Becomes Essential
As agents take on more responsibility, monitoring them becomes mission-critical. In 2025, CB Insights tracked seven early-stage deals in AI agent observability and governance, which totaled $30.9 million.
Why is this happening? Agents that see things that aren’t there or act in strange ways are a direct threat to operations. Cekura and Coval are two startups that raised seed rounds in 2025. They both work on testing and simulating voice AI agents. Larridin raised $17 million to tackle the challenge of measuring AI productivity – quantifying ROI in human-AI hybrid workforces.
This trend is not up for discussion among business buyers. According to various surveys, approximately a third of executives say that security and governance are the most important factors when choosing an agent platform, even more important than ease of integration.
What This Means for Decision-Makers
Here are some useful lessons from the trends of 2026 for people in charge of AI strategy in their companies.
First, put governance at the top of your list of things to do. Before you scale, ensure that your agent deployments have audit trails, access controls, and monitoring.
Second, invest in data quality. InformationWeek says that a lot of companies have not thought about how much time and money it will take to make unstructured data better. Even the best algorithms will make bad choices if the data is not clean.
Third, get ready for the change in talent. According to different reports, about a third of stakeholders point out the lack of skills as a barrier to growth. You need people who know more than just how to write prompts. They also need to know how to run agents, evaluate their performance, and keep them in line.
