Bayside STEAM Academy is Awarded Samsung Grant

Televisions will Support Student Learning

The beginning of the 2016-2017 school year marked the renaming of Bayside Elementary School as Bayside STEAM Academy. The official switch highlighted the school’s focus on core subjects like science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM). A group of teachers, called the “STEAM Team,” are continuing to experiment with curriculum materials and classroom tools with this new focus.

The name change also aligns with the district’s constant cultivation of students who are creative and innovative thinkers in and out of the classroom. New initiatives include an engineering lab, lessons on robotics, and new art class tools, which have stirred excitement among students. By partnering with STEAM maker workshop, students can engage in specific activities that focus on these academic fields.

The Samsung Television Donation Program awarded Bayside STEAM Academy with a grant in honor of these academic pursuits. This generous grant funded the installation of four state-of-the-art televisions, which have been set up in classrooms and the school library. The grant allows Bayside to request additional technology and software support throughout the next five years. Teachers and students can utilize these larger screens to enhance each class experience. For video production and science lessons, students can now easily share their visuals and presentations with peers.

Bayside STEAM Academy has taken this grant as a step forward in creating a learning environment where students are exposed to possible future careers. By getting a glimpse into what a career in the STEAM industries could mean, students can hold higher visions and goals for their own lives. Educators districtwide encourage this early exposure, knowing the tremendous impact it can have on a student’s academic achievement.
