The other way of reducing nitrogen oxide emissions is to use exhaust gas after treatment with an SCR catalytic converter (selective catalytic reduction). Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) is a process that simply adds a Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) into the exhaust gas stream and filters it through a catalyst. SCR technology uses less fuel since the engine is tuned to cut NOx and can instead be set up for performance and economy. Very low limits for both nitrogen oxide and diesel particulates can make use of such an SCR system necessary. Exhaust gas recirculation can reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by around 40 percent. Depending on the application, SCR systems remove up to 90 percent of the nitrogen oxide from exhaust gases. Thus, with particularly stringent emission standards, combination of exhaust gas recirculation and a SCR system is an upcoming trend. With both, EGR and SCR in place, engines can be fine-tuned for optimum fuel efficiency with greater reductions in emissions.

Stringent emission norms such as Euro VI have forced vehicle OEMs to employ high end after-treatment systems such as SCR, lean NOx traps (LNT) and exhaust gas recirculation (EGR).
