Author William Jones discusses black comic book characters during book signing at Philly bookstore

Author William Jones recently made a successful return appearance to a Philadelphia bookstore to discuss and sign copies of his latest book.

Jones, a self-described comic book geek, is the author of The Ex-Con, Voodoo Priest, Goddess, and the African King: A Social, Cultural, and Political Analysis of Four Black Comic Book Heroes. The book breaks down the origins of four black comic book characters – Luke Cage, Papa Midnite, Storm, and Black Panther – and analyzes their representation throughout comic book history.

The discussion and book signing was held on Saturday, June 3, 2017, at Amalgam Comics and Coffeehouse in Philadelphia.

“Just like the Free Comic Book Day event, this appearance at Amalgam was a huge success,” Jones said. “I truly appreciate the invitation to discuss my book at Amalgam. Philadelphia has welcomed me with open arms.”

Amalgam Comics and Coffeehouse is located in the Kensington neighborhood of Philadelphia. The store is owned by Ariell Johnson, a proponent of the comic book world becoming more inclusive and the first African American woman to open a comic book store on the East Coast.

The Ex-Con, Voodoo Priest, Goddess, and the African King is popular with long-time enthusiasts of comic books, sci-fi and the supernatural, established and aspiring creators, and new and casual fans. Those in attendance typically find fresh realizations during his discussions, Jones said.

Jones is the founder of Afrofuturism Network, an organization that seeks to support the ever-growing community of black writers, artists, and thinkers in the realms of sci-fi, fantasy, comic books and film, and analyzes the contributions and portrayal of black characters in these mediums.

He speaks regularly on the subjects of the history of black people in America and the image of black people in various forms of media, pop culture and hip-hop music at various venues, college campuses and at conferences both nationally and abroad. He also hosts workshops for young people where he shares his knowledge of black comic book heroes and illustration techniques.
