About This Project

Mario Gallegos is a Los Angeles based American filmmaker, who is pursuing his Master’s Degree in Fine Arts and is making a film for his MFA Thesis. This film is titled Tecata, and it is about the issues related to drug addiction and family issues. The story centers in a young girl who is trying to keep her family afloat as her mother sinks further into the depths of heroin addiction. Storybooks, film, and television have taught us that a  mother is the safetynet, the fix all, the love for a child, but what happens when she is no longer capable and the children have to watch as she slowly loses herself to addiction. The project also deals with the pressures young women face when coming of age and how opportunities are often tied in to womanhood, appearance and identity.

The story is set in New Mexico, where for generations addiction and poverty have had a great effect on the community, many of whom have been there for hundreds and hundreds of years. With the current lack of diversity and representation in the entertainment industry, Mario plans to have an all native/Latinx/chicanx/Hispanic cast and crew. Furthermore, in the hopes of creating the best film possible he feels people like himself more easily relate to the characters and subject matter. He is also hoping to have equal representation by those identifying as female to those identifying as male on the crew.  Due to the ongoing Global pandemic, the filmmaker is facing many challenges and he is therefore welcoming people to support his Kickstarter campaign.
