14k gold is 58.3 percent pure gold and 18k is 75 percent, both excellent metals that supply hardness and color. Nickel is commonly used in white gold, and because white gold retains a faint warmth from its gold content, it is plated with rhodium for a high white luster. That plating is thin, and can wear through in spots over time, but is restored by polishing and re-plating.
