Andrew Schutte of COUNTERPART ERP Discusses How to Keep Quality Engineers with the Right Tools

Andrew Schutte, General Manager for COUNTERPART ERP recently discussed the quality impacts of dissatisfied engineers, especially those in the engineer-to-order (ETO) manufacturing space. Read the recent Quality Digest article here.

According to Schutte, ETO products are designed and engineered on the fly based on initial customer specifications. Engineers work with the customer throughout the process to meet those specific demands. This means that design, materials, and even design goals change ongoingly.

With all the permutations inherent in the ETO design and manufacturing process, it may seem counterintuitive that so many industrial engineers are bored, exhausted, and dissatisfied. The exhaustion in the ETO manufacturing process is not from the engineering and design creativity needed, but rather the antiquated tools, disconnected technologies, and need to constantly create production work-arounds to offset and compensate for system inefficiencies.

“One of the biggest issues facing industrial engineers are enterprise resource planning (ERP) solutions that are ill suited for ETO companies. Engineers are spending too much of their work time fixing and overcoming software limitations instead of focusing on engineering,” noted Schutte.

Schutte was also a recent guest on Quality Digest Live, a video podcast produced by Quality Digest publication. Watch the video here.

Quality Digest magazine presents all facets of quality, including metrology, Six Sigma, lean, inspection, testing, SPC, software, and international standards. Quality Digest offers more editorial coverage of these standards than any other quality magazine or web site.

About COUNTERPART ETO ERP:

Unlike many ETO ERP solutions COUNTERPART is an engineering-centric solution.  Most ERP systems are back-office accounting solutions and distracted by CRM and other operational functions. COUNTERPART ensures there are no features which detract from focusing on the BOM (Bill of Materials) to address the fast-changing engineering challenges of ETO manufacturers.

COUNTERPART enables manufacturing teams to access the information needed to do the job. By offering a bi-directional software solution integrated with SOLIDWORKS® to share real-time information with those who need it, engineers and purchasing have a non-stop and instantaneous job progress status report. These COUNTERPART elements allow ETO manufacturers to leverage the information to improve engineering efficiency.

According to COUNTERPART General Manager Andrew Schutte, “When ETO manufacturers improve visibility into project monitoring and focus on challenges and opportunities for improvement, best-in-class lean manufacturing is achieved.”

Schutte also noted that the project management capability with COUNTERPART enhances teams’ efficiency by configuring the software solution to meet the work environment and specific engineering needs. Every job is assigned to the right team member prioritized by release date, lead times, due dates, and more. Every engineering-focused manufacturer will appreciate the critical functionality focus.”
