An amateur astronomer creates an interactive map of the moon showcasing every moon landing to date

To celebrate the start of the Artemis Program on August 29 2022, amateur astronomer Tom Urbain created an interactive map of the moon. The map highlights every successful landing on the lunar surface to date.

As space exploration missions are starting to ramp up again, Tom thought it was important to remember all of the successes of those who paved the way for lunar exploration. The map includes all of the locations of successful landings (whether crewed or uncrewed missions).

The map is available here: https://starlust.org/successful-moon-landings-interactive-map/

By clicking on each location, you’ll be able to learn more about the specific mission that landed there. The map will be kept updated with any new moon landings in the future.

The Artemis program is a human spaceflight program led by NASA to explore the Moon, aiming for its first touchdown on the lunar south pole by 2025. If successful, the Artemis program will perform the first crewed lunar landing mission since Apollo 17 in December 1972, the final crewed expedition of the Apollo program.

The program is expected to be a multinational collaborative project between governmental space agencies and private spaceflight companies.

Tom’s website, starlust.org, was created in order to share his passion for space exploration, astronomy and stargazing with others.

”We don’t aspire to turn our readers into rocket scientists, but to simply offer content to people, like us, with a keen interest in astronomy but very little technical background”, said Tom Urbain, founder of Starlust.org

As well as sharing the finest astronomemes available on the internet, Tom hopes to inspire curiosity and increase interest in space exploration through in-depth articles about the ins and outs of spaceflight.
