Alex Osborne On Challenging Perceptual Possibilities Of Color

Alex Osborne may have just entered his third decade on the planet, but his impressive body of work is a testament to how age is of negligence when it comes to artistic ingenuity. The Brooklyn-based artist, who has long been motivated by his curiosity to experiment with the diverse media in which he works, recently spoke of how challenging the perceptual possibilities of color has come to be known as the hallmark of his oeuvre.

“I was always fascinated with the transformative power of digital platforms such as Photoshop,” said Alex. “The digitization of my paintings and their manipulation through the program allowed me to experiment with the visual format and alter the compositions to paradoxical final pieces that, while at first glance appear entirely psychedelic, evoke a sense of calm once the viewer becomes more acquainted with them.”

Works like Make Up, X and Bali resemble what one might imagine is the exact moment after participants have aimed their powder-filled pouches at each other during a festival of colors celebration, yet, in the same breath, they can be read as anything ranging from a blooming flower to the birth of the universe itself. Such is the masterful manner with which Alex approaches the very basis of painting – and visual communication itself: color being stretched to reach its limitless possibilities, and be interpreted as a mirror of viewers’ individual mosaic look of the world.

In his newest works, Alex allows acrylic paint, resin, glue and collaged pieces of fabric to guide him as his freehand motions reflect the fleeting moment of creation, and the chance incidents spurring it to lfie. Likened to early Dadaist work, this fresh crop of paintings has already made its appearance on his Instagram page, and is soon expected to grace gallery walls in New York City, and beyond the confines of US borders.

Alex Osborne is represented by Flat Space Art in London, Agora Gallery in New York City and Daniel Kinkade in Chicago.
