Amyloid light-chain (AL) amyloidosis, also known as primary amyloidosis, is the most common form of systemic amyloidosis in the US. The disease is caused when a person’s antibody-producing cells do not function properly and produce abnormal protein fibers made of components of antibodies called light chains.
The amyloid deposits in AL amyloidosis are not themselves cancerous; however, the condition may occasionally be associated with cancer called myeloma. Regardless of whether or not a patient has myeloma associated with their amyloidosis, the treatments for AL amyloidosis are similar to those for myeloma. The survival of patients with amyloidosis is quite variable, with median survival ranging from 12 months to 18 months in different series, and largely depends on the number of organs involved and the severity of their involvement.
