Global Airborne LiDAR Market Revenue, Leading Players, Overview, Report Information by Type (Topographic & Bathymetric), by Platform (Fixed Wing Aircraft, Rotary Wing Aircraft & Unmanned Aerial Vehicles), by Solution (System (Hardware & Software) & Services), & Region – Forecast Till 2023

An airborne LiDAR is an instrument that aids in the acquisition of accurate and impenetrable topographic data at a high speed. It is mounted on helicopters, drones, aircrafts, and other airborne vehicles. The LiDAR emits rapid pulses at up to 150,000 pulses per second at the ground surface. A sensor then detects the amount of time taken for each pulse to be bounced back from the ground surface. This helps LiDAR systems to provide a 3D laser profiling and scanning. The LiDAR technique has also been used to generate Digital Elevation Model (DEM), Digital Terrain Model (DTM), as well as, Digital Surface Model (DSM).

Competitive Analysis:

Significant players in the airborne LiDAR market are Saab AB (Sweden), Teledyne Technologies (U.S.), Leica Geosystems (Switzerland), FLIR Systems (U.S.), Faro Technologies Inc. (U.S.), Leosphere SAS (France), 3D Laser Mapping (England), Firmatek (U.S.), RIEGL Laser Measurement Systems GmbH (Northeast Africa), Quanergy Systems, Inc. (U.S.), Raymetrics S.A. (Greece), and others. Mergers, acquisitions, joint ventures, product launches are strategies that the major companies employ in a bid to stay afloat. But these tactics help the market as well in its expansion plans.

The airborne LiDAR systems provide explicit 3D imaging and scanning of the ground surface and are mounted on drones, helicopters and single and twin-engine planes. As per the report that has been published by Market research Future (MRFR), the global airborne LiDAR market is anticipated to expand remarkably at a robust CAGR of 19% during the forecast period of 2018-2023.

Segmental Analysis:

The airborne LiDAR market has been segmented on the basis of type, platform, solution, and region. Based on type, the airborne LiDAR market has been bifurcated into topographic LiDAR and bathymetric LiDAR. The segment of topographic LiDAR is estimated to garner major market growth during the forecast timeline. Such growth can be attributed to the rise in demand for enhanced situational awareness and survey activities, such as seismology, cartography, and meteorology. Based on platform the market has been segmented into fixed winged aircraft (FWA), rotatory winged aircraft (RWA), and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).

By solution, the airborne LiDAR market has been segmented into systems and services. The segment of systems is further segmented into hardware and software. The subsegment of hardware is further segmented into lasers, scanners, interface devices, ranging devices, inertial measurement systems, and GPS position systems. The systems segment is deemed to dominate the market due to the high cost of laser sensor and control unit of LiDAR. The hardware subsegment is projected to dominate the airborne LiDAR market for the next five years. Whereas, the software segment is expected to project highest growth during the forecast period due to prompted penetration of artificial intelligence (AI) in various airborne mapping applications.

The segment of services has been further segmented into oil & gas, mining, defense & aerospace, infrastructure, forestry & agriculture, and transportation & logistics. The segments of mining and defense & aerospace are estimated to maintain dominance over the airborne LiDAR market during the review period. The segments of transportation & logistics are expected to garner highest market growth between 2018 and 2023.

Regional Analysis:

Geographical analysis of the airborne LiDAR market includes North America, Europe, Asia Pacific (APAC), Middle East & Africa (MEA), and South America.

North America is reaping the benefits of technological superiority and generating the maximum revenue. The region is having a great time as the U.S. is investing significantly in integrating the latest LiDAR system in their defense and other sectors. Canada mostly uses technology to improve infrastructurally. The U.S. government has acquisition plans for a lot of unmanned aerial systems in their cards which can ensure significant market traction.

The APAC region and Europe are also involving the technology to avert various crises such as migrant issues, cross-border tension, and others. China is one country that is fast emerging as a global powerhouse. Their expenditure in the field is quite substantial.

Industry Updates:

FLIR Systems, in 2018, completes their acquisition of Acyclica, a software company that provides cloud-based analytics.

3D Laser Mapping, in July 2018, announced their decision to merge with GeoSLAM to expand their market on a global scale. This merger can boost the research & development efforts invested in the 3D scanning technology.

February 2018: BoE Systems integrated cutting edge hardware and software in order to provide highly accurate geospatial data collection solutions. These drone-based aerial LiDAR systems aid in the creation of 3D models, also known as point clouds, which are ideal for multiple industry uses. These point clouds hold critical data points such as geodetic locations, slope identification, point-to-point measurements, and volumertics.
