A ‘Willy Wonka’ chocolate factory will open in Europe by 2024

A ‘WILLY WONKA’ chocolate factory with a full-size rollercoaster is to be built in the Netherlands by 2024.

Created by ethical chocolate brand Tony’s Chocolonely, the factory will offer both education regarding the food industry as well as interactive games and experiences.

The building, currently called Pakhuis ‘De Vrede’ and used to store grains and cocoa, will be turned into Tony’s Chocolonely Chocolate Circus. It will be located on the border between Amsterdam and Zaanstad with canal boats taking guests to the front.

The comparisons with Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory are clear, with guests able to watch the chocolate-making process within the factory. Kids can also learn about how chocolate is made from the very beginning, from farming to it landing on the shelves. Videos, interactive activities and information points will educate visitors on the chocolate industry.

Of course, inside there will be cafes and snack stores with chocolatey food and drink options, which are yet to be revealed. Passengers will slowly climb up the track next to the canal before facing a steep drop and looping round and round.

They first revealed plans for its Chocolate Circus back in 2018 but recently announced it would be postponed due to the pandemic.

They explained on their website: “We might have to wait a little longer… our big dream, Tony’s Chocolonely Chocolate Circus, a mission-driven chocolate factory with a visitor centre and roller coaster, is on hold for now.”

Chocolate fans can also head to Philadelphia where Hersheyland exists, with chocolate and sweet themed rides and rollercoasters.

Closer to home, an outlet factory in Brussels owned by Belgian chocolatier Neuhaus lets visitors try as much of the chocolate as they want while there.

Closer still? The Chocolate Boutique Hotel in Bournemouth also offers chocolate baskets or fountain packages to guests – or you can just make the most of the free daily truffles.
