12-Year-Old 6th Grader Knocks Out 7th And 8th Graders To Make Scripps National Spelling Bee In Florida

Gifted sixth-grader, Amor Wilson, Wins the 2021 Prince George’s County Spelling Bee to advance to the Scripps National Spelling this Summer in Florida

Amor Wilson can be rightly described as the “spelling prince” as the 12-year-old sixth-grader recently won the 2021 Prince George’s County Spelling Bee competition, beating 7th and 8th graders on his way to winning the coveted prize. Consequently, the brilliant Amor is set to represent Prince George’s County at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Orlando, Florida.

Spelling remains one of the most difficult skills in the world. Consequently, gifted spellers are often regarded in high spaces for their intelligence and amazing ability to put alphabets together to make words. Such is the case of Amor Wilson who recently stunned Prince George’s County by fighting off competition in the recently concluded spelling bee.

Amor emerged winner after competing with himself as he defeated other participants. He stayed on till the 15th round of the competition, emerging the winner after successfully spelling “solenoid”, much to the relief of the audience and panel.

I can finally exhale,” Washington Informer Publisher Denise Rolark Barnes exclaimed after Amor’s win. “Amor, you did so well and we’re very proud of you.”

The 2021 edition of the spelling bee was the first of its kind virtual competition, featuring history-making contestants — all of whom attend middle schools in Prince George’s County. Sponsored by the Informer, the competition has become increasingly popular over the years, serving as a way of saluting and supporting participating students and their talents.

Amor has continued to receive accolades from different quarters, especially with his family, and loved showering him with lots of praise for his stellar performance. “My son Amor is a brilliant child he strives to be the best even if he forgets to do chores and clean his room,” his mom said.

In addition to the prizes, Amor will receive from The Informer and other sponsors. He will also be heading to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Orlando, Fla. in July to compete in the nationally televised event for which he will represent Prince George’s County.
