This report has been designed to provide a detailed analysis of the global carpet market. It covers the most recent data sets of quantitative medium-term projections, as well as developments in production, trade, consumption and prices. 

The global trade in carpets and other textile floor coverings amounted to 1,517 million USD in 2015, showing strong volatility over the period under review. A 20% drop in 2009 was followed by a spike in 2010, with exports exceeding their pre-recession value. Exports declined again in 2012, briefly increased in 2013, then continued falling through the end of the period under review. Overall, there was an annual decrease of -0.7% from 2007 to 2015.

According to IndexBox estimates, India was the global leader in exports of carpets throughout most of the period under review, with the exception of 2011 and 2012, when it gave way to Egypt. In 2015, India’s exports of carpets totaled 449 million USD, which accounted for a 30% share of global exports. Egypt, China, Pakistan, and Iran were the other key global suppliers of carpets and other textile floor coverings in 2015, with a 41% combined share of global exports.

Egypt grew its share of global exports from 0% to 20% from 2007 to 2015, becoming one of the world’s largest exporters. Besides Egypt, India was the only other major exporter with a positive rate of growth (+4.1%), with the balance of the exporters exhibiting negative growth rates over the same period.

On the other hand, USA (37%, based on value terms), Germany (10%), UAE (9%), the UK (4%), and Japan (4%) were the leading destinations of imports of carpets and other textile floor coverings in 2015. Imports to the UAE expanded rapidly at a rate of +20.6% per year from 2007 to 2015. By contrast, Germany significantly contracted its imports of carpets and other textile floor coverings over the same period. The UAE grew its share of global imports by +8 percentage points, while the share of Germany contracted by -6 percentage points.
