MARIETTA, GA – October 15, 2026 – Conversations about the planet’s future often begin with climate, resources and technology. Robert Engelman’s Intending Eden: Parenting, Population, and the Planet begins somewhere more personal: with the choices people make about having and raising children.
Published in a revised 2026 edition by Author’s Tranquility Press, Intending Eden revisits questions Engelman has examined for decades. Originally published in 2008 as More: Population, Nature, and What Women Want, the book returns under Engelman’s originally intended title, with updated demographic figures, facts, and new information reflecting momentous change since its original publication.
One update puts the book’s return into immediate context. Engelman notes that the estimated global population stood at roughly 6.7 billion people when the first edition appeared. Today he places that figure at around 8.3 billion. That increase provides a backdrop for the book’s examination of parenting, reproductive choice, women’s autonomy, population growth, and the natural systems that sustain human life.
But Intending Eden is not just about numbers.
Drawing on demography, anthropology, history, and compelling stories from his own wide travels, Engelman leads readers on a lively journey through time. He looks closely at how reproduction and population have shaped civilizations and humanity’s relationship with nature. At the heart of the book is a question: What happens when parents, particularly women, are able to determine the timing and frequency of childbearing for themselves?
The answer, Engelman argues compellingly, is that true reproductive autonomy tends to put population change onto more sustainable paths.
That perspective shifts the discussion from population as an abstract statistic to the individual lives, intentions, and family decisions that drive demographic trends. The result is a wide-ranging discussion of the population grounded in the people behind the numbers and the circumstances and choices—or lack of choices—that influence demographic change.
In doing so, Intending Eden connects choices made within families—and the option for parents and non-parenting to implement their choices—to broader questions about population and sustainability. Ultimately, this book is a travel guide to the earthly Eden we can hope future generations will inherit.
Intending Eden: Parenting, Population, and the Planet is now available on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Bookshop.
