SAN DIEGO, CA – August 26, 2026 – OmniCanvas, an infinite-canvas note-taking application, allows guests to join a live collaborative canvas without creating an account. A guest opens an invite link, enters a display name, and joins the session.
Up to 25 people can collaborate on the same OmniCanvas note at once. Each participant gets a color-coded live cursor labeled with their display name.
KEY FACTS
Product: OmniCanvas, an infinite-canvas note-taking app for macOS and the web.
No account required for guests: A guest joins by opening an invite link and entering a display name.
Concurrent limit: Up to 25 simultaneous collaborators per note.
What syncs in real time: Canvas elements including drawings, shapes and text; sticky notes with content, position and color; image and file assets; and every participant’s live cursor position.
Live cursors: Eight distinct cursor colors, each labeled with the collaborator’s display name.
Transport: WebSockets, with room state managed by Cloudflare Durable Objects.
Permission control: Each invite link is set to view-only or edit.
Link expiry: Configurable, defaulting to 24 hours.
Usage cap: Each invite link can be limited to a maximum number of joins.
Persistent edits: The note owner chooses whether guest edits remain on the canvas after the session ends.
Email invites: Invite links can be sent directly by email from the share dialog.
Conflict resolution: Version-based. Each change increments the canvas version and the higher version is accepted, then broadcast to all clients.
Encrypted notes cannot be shared: The share button is disabled on encrypted notes.
Requires connectivity: Collaboration needs an active internet connection. There is no offline collaboration mode.
WHY THE ACCOUNT REQUIREMENT MATTERS
Asking someone to create an account before they can look at a diagram is a real cost. For a client reviewing a proposal, a candidate walking through a take-home exercise, or a friend helping plan a trip, signup is often the point at which the collaboration simply does not happen.
OmniCanvas removes that step for the guest. The note owner has an OmniCanvas account. The people they invite do not need one.
The invite link is scoped rather than open-ended. The owner sets whether the link grants viewing or editing, how long it stays valid, how many people may use it, and whether anything a guest draws survives the session. A link intended for one reviewer for one afternoon can be configured that way.
THE LIMITATION THAT PROVES THE ENCRYPTION CLAIM
OmniCanvas cannot share an encrypted note. The share button is disabled on encrypted notes, and this is not an unfinished feature.
Real-time collaboration requires the OmniCanvas server to relay canvas data between participants. Zero-knowledge encryption requires that the server never holds anything but ciphertext. Those two requirements are mutually exclusive, so OmniCanvas enforces the boundary rather than quietly weakening the encryption to enable sharing.
A user who needs a note both encrypted and collaborative cannot have both at once in OmniCanvas. That trade-off is stated rather than hidden, and it is the practical evidence that the encryption is doing what OmniCanvas says it does.
“The moment you ask a guest to make an account, half of them are gone, and the ones who stay resent it,” said Sean Conroy, founder of OmniCanvas. “We also can’t share an encrypted note, and I’d rather say that plainly than quietly relay the plaintext through our server and keep calling it zero-knowledge. A privacy guarantee that never costs you a feature isn’t a guarantee.”
