New York, NY – August 25, 2026 – Doing nothing feels free. It isn’t. The raise never requested. The business idea left untested. The skill someone keeps promising to learn “someday.” The savings quietly losing purchasing power while sitting untouched. These decisions rarely arrive with an invoice, but they can carry a very real cost.
In the new book The Price of Playing Safe: Why Doing Nothing Is the Riskiest Bet You’ll Ever Make, released August 15, 2026, Armando Gutierrez challenges readers to examine a side of risk that often goes unnoticed: the consequences of staying exactly where they are.
Rather than encouraging people to recklessly quit jobs, drain savings accounts, or gamble everything on a dream, The Price of Playing Safe makes a different case. The goal is not to take more risk. It is to make better decisions when the outcome is uncertain.
“Playing safe is not stupid. Sometimes it keeps you alive,” the book explains. “Safety matters. But safety is supposed to be a tool. Not the purpose of your entire life.”
At the center of the book is a deceptively simple question: Can I survive being wrong?
Gutierrez applies that question to career moves, investing, entrepreneurship, education, leverage, personal finances, and other decisions where both action and inaction carry consequences. Readers are encouraged to examine the upside, identify the worst plausible downside, determine what they cannot afford to lose, gather evidence, and decide whether the opportunity has earned a larger commitment.
The book introduces several practical frameworks readers can use to evaluate their own decisions:
- THE FLOOR — Identify the parts of life no bet is allowed to touch, including housing, essential expenses, dependents, and emergency liquidity.
- CORE + EXPERIMENTS — Protect the core while creating room to pursue opportunities that may fail.
- PRICE THE BET — Translate a decision into its potential costs in money, income, time, liquidity, reputation, and future options.
- RUN BOTH MOVIES — Imagine acting and failing, then imagine doing nothing for five years and regretting it. Both outcomes have to answer for their risks.
- THE TEN-YEAR RISK PORTFOLIO — Build the next decade around five jobs: Core, Compounders, Experiments, Big Bets, and Risks of Inaction.
Throughout the book, Gutierrez uses stories, research, statistics, calculations, and scenarios to move risk out of the abstract. Examples range from a janitor who quietly accumulated an $8 million fortune to the early testing of a veteran-founded coffee business. The book also clearly distinguishes sourced real-world examples from illustrative scenarios.
But The Price of Playing Safe is designed to be used, not simply read.
Write-in exercises ask readers to calculate costs, question assumptions, examine what they are protecting, determine what evidence they are missing, and identify the cheapest serious way to learn more before making a major commitment. One recurring principle is that information is often cheaper than commitment: applying for a job is not quitting one, talking to customers is not launching a company, and researching an opportunity is not the same as betting money on it.
The result may be GO. It may also be WAIT, SHRINK IT, GET MORE EVIDENCE, or WALK AWAY. The book treats all five as potentially successful decisions because calculated risk is not about manufacturing courage; it is about understanding exposure before paying the price.
For career changers, first-generation earners, aspiring entrepreneurs, investors, and anyone who has spent years “getting ready” for something they never seem to begin, The Price of Playing Safe asks readers to put their own postponed decision on paper.
Because the cost of acting may be obvious. The cost of never acting can be much harder to see.
About the Author
Armando Gutierrez is a 28-year-old first-generation American and U.S. Army veteran who served on active duty with the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault). His interest in investing began at fifteen, when watching The Wolf of Wall Street introduced him to a world of stocks, business, ownership, and wealth that had never been part of his upbringing.
Over the years, that curiosity developed into firsthand experience with investing, trading, business, real estate, technology, and risk. Gutierrez approaches the subject not from the “finish line,” but as someone still building, learning, making decisions, and examining the lessons that come from both wins and losses.
The Price of Playing Safe is the book he wishes someone had handed him when he first began trying to understand how to pursue opportunity without putting everything that matters on the line.
