What is Split Core Current Transformer? Industry Trends and Best Practices

A Split-Core Current Transformer is a type of current sensing device with a unique separable core design. Its core can be opened and closed like a “clamp,” allowing it to be directly attached around an existing conductor without disconnecting the circuit. This enables non-invasive installation.

Unlike traditional current transformers (CTs) that require conductors to be threaded through a solid core (necessitating power shutdown and cable disassembly), split-core CTs can be clamped onto live cables without interrupting service. This design significantly enhances installation flexibility and safety.

How It Works?

Split-core CTs operate on the principle of electromagnetic induction:

  1. When a current-carrying conductor passes through the core (or is placed within its opening), the alternating magnetic field generated around the conductor induces magnetic flux in the core.

  2. The secondary winding wrapped around the core senses changes in magnetic flux and produces a proportional secondary current (typically standardized to 5A or 1A output).

  3. By measuring the secondary current, the primary current value can be accurately calculated.

Key Advantages:

Compared to solid-core CTs, split-core CTs offer distinct benefits:

Advantage Description
Live-line Installation Can be installed on energized circuits without downtime or production loss.
Flexibility & Convenience Ideal for retrofits or temporary monitoring; no need to replace cables or equipment.
Safety & Reliability Reduces electrical hazards during installation, especially in high-voltage or critical power scenarios.
Wide Applicability Suitable for power distribution systems, industrial equipment, Energy Management Systems (EMS), and smart grid monitoring.

Typical Applications

  1. Energy Management & Monitoring

    • Real-time monitoring of electrical loads in factories and buildings to support energy-saving initiatives.

  2. Power Distribution System Retrofits

    • Upgrading existing distribution panels for current monitoring without rewiring.

  3. Fault Diagnosis & Prevention

    • Detecting current imbalances, harmonics, or overloads to prevent potential failures.

  4. Renewable Energy Systems

    • Monitoring output currents from solar PV arrays or wind turbines.

Key Technical Parameters for Selection

Consider the following when selecting a split-core CT:

  • Rated Primary Current: Choose based on maximum load current (e.g., 200A, 500A, 1000A).

  • Accuracy Class: Common classes: 0.5, 1. Higher accuracy (e.g., 0.5) is required for energy audits.

  • Core Opening Size: Must exceed the outer diameter of the cable or busbar being measured.

  • Output Signal: Standard 5A/1A analog.

  • Protection Rating: For outdoor use, select IP65 or higher for dust and water resistance.
