Dual Language Immersion Programs Encourage Empathy

Alpine Union School District provides strong Dual Spanish Language Immersion Program at schools.

Alpine Union School District proudly hosts a Dual Spanish Language Immersion School at its Shadow Hills Elementary and a Dual Spanish Language Immersion Program at Joan MacQueen Middle school and Creekside Early Learning Center.

The purpose of our Dual Spanish Language Immersion is to meet the needs of parents who see the value of giving children the gift of bilingualism, expand the educational and professional opportunities for students and enhance the learning potential of students by expanding children’s cognitive capacity.

According to NPR, bilingual education positively affects at least six functions of the brain. These functions include attention, empathy, reading, school performance and engagement, diversity and integration, and protection against cognitive decline and dementia.

This dual-language Spanish program is offered to Preschoolers through middle schoolers. It is a 50-50 model, meaning that students are instructed in Spanish at least half of the school-day in core subjects such as reading, writing, mathematics, science and social studies. The other half of the day students learn to read, write, and speak in English, in addition to learning other core subjects in English.

In order to maximize student achievement goals, a long term commitment to the program (6+ years) is necessary.

Alpine Union School District continues to put students’ excellence first through this program, in addition to teaching the importance of community involvement.
