The workshop series spans eight 2-hour sessions, Wednesday evenings and Saturday afternoons using web-conferencing technology. Participants will listen to and dissect great lyrics. Assignments will be given out and by the end of the four week workshop, each student should walk away with several types of lyrics, ready to be set to music. See for more information.
The series is intended for lyricists of all levels and genres, while providing techniques and tools towards mastery of the craft. Mr. Cole will focus on the musical theatre genre to help convey each lesson. He believes that if you learn these skills through musical theatre, you will be easily able to apply this new awareness to all other genres. You will examine ballads, comedy, special material, classic pop and movie songs.
As you learn from the greats, Mr. Cole will expose the craft and hard work to make something perfect, or try to. Learning the classical rules enables you to have a foundation from which to blossom and find your own voice. Whether you are a beginner with an affinity for words, or an experienced songwriter, looking for ways to become better at your craft, this class will address your needs and be a helluva lot of fun to boot. Work on many aspects of advanced lyric-writing, including hooks, metaphors, similes, rhyme, rhythm and meter, song structure, genre and enhancing emotion. “I learned the craft of lyric writing by a master!! Specifics, history, theme. Personalized teaching. He recognizes each student’s strengths and weaknesses and crafts individual assignments designed to improve everyone’s work.
He gives amazing feedback on both what works with a lyric and what doesn’t. Aside from the wonderful lyrics we analyze from the 20 and 21st centuries, he recommends additional lyrics for students to study based on what they need to improve.
