The Vietnam National Tobacco Corporation (VNTC or Vinataba) was established in 1985 is not only the largest cigarette producer in Vietnam but one of the largest business enterprises in the country. It is a state-owned holding group which, since June 2007, has been the only concern permitted to produce, import, and distribute cigarettes and cigars in Vietnam. VNTC comprises a number of directly controlled cigarette production units, as well as tobacco growing companies, support and service companies, and several joint venture companies. VNTC has international partnerships with the likes of BAT, JTI, PMI, and Imperial Tobacco whereby foreign brands are produced under license in VNTC’s factories. Vietnam is a large and was, until recently, a growing market for cigarettes. Imports have been effectively prohibited in Vietnam since 1990, although illegal importation is widespread, to the extent that it accounts for just under a fifth of consumption. Recently, such contraband has negatively impacted legal sales. In the last few years, Vinataba has placed increasing focus on building up its exports to ensure long term profitability for the company.
