Studies Show Flowers are a Great Holiday Blues Busting Gift

Greeneā€™s Flower Shoppe prepares for top floral-buying holiday

CINCINNATI, OHIO – DECEMBER 5, 2016Let’s face it. Holidays can be stressful, both with the running around to prepare and the memories of those relatives and friends no longer with us to celebrate. Want to do something to help someone get over the holiday blues? Consider sending flowers.

Greene’s Flower Shoppe is preparing for the holiday wish and reminding customers that more people send flowers around Christmas than any other holiday. That means get orders in early.

Greene’s also wants to give people a hint to consider giving flowers to those whom they know are feeling down this holiday season. Studies show it gives an emotional boost.

Rutgers University psychology professor Jeannette Haviland-Jones has completed studiesshowing that flowers improve emotional health. Participants in the studies reported feeling less depressed, anxious and agitated after they received flowers. The studies also showed that there is increased contact with family and friends when flowers are present.

What do flowers do? According to the study they spur a Duchenne smile, considered a genuine or “true” smile. The study doesn’t specifically mention the holidays, but what better time to send a genuine smile?

Consumers have many choices including the traditional poinsettias. Ancient Mexican lore ties these flowers to Christmas with the story of a Mexican girl named Pepita who didn’t know what to give baby Jesus. Like the study, it ties back to a smile and a gift.

Pepita grabbed a handful of weeds and made them into a small bouquet, taking the advice of her cousin who said even a small gift would make baby Jesus happy if given with love. As she laid the flowers near the nativity scene, they burst into bright red flowers known as “Flores de Noche Buena” or “Flowers of the Holy Night.”

Poinsettias continue to bring smiles and a reminder of the true meaning behind the holiday with their red colored leaves symbolizing the blood of Christ and the white leaves his purity.

Greene’s Flower Shoppe has poinsettias and more as the popular Cincinnati flower shop starts taking orders for its Christmas flowerdeliveries. Christmas centerpieces, poinsettia baskets, a Traditional Tidings Sleigh Arrangement and a Christmas cactus are just some of the choices consumers have.

The Christmas and Hanukkah season is both a joyous and busy time for florists, considering it’s the top floral-buying holiday. An estimated 30 percent of adults buy flowers or plants as gifts for the holiday season. Consumers are urged to place their orders as early as possible.
