Robert Louis Shepard, PhD Honored Guest at Inauguration of First Indigenous Vice Chancellor (President) of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology in Nigeria

Former mentee wants mentor by his side at upcoming inauguration.

ROCKVILLE, MD – Feb 4, 2019 – Author, speaker, chemist and mentor, Robert Louis Shepard, PhD will attend the inauguration of his accomplished mentee, Professor Michael Olufisayo Ologunde, as he becomes the first indigenous Vice Chancellor (President) of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology in Ogbomoso, Nigeria.

As Visiting Scientist in Howard University’s Chemistry Department and researcher, respectively, on The Amaranth Project, Shepard and Ologunde forged a relationship in the mid-80s that spans across decades and continents.  According to Shepard, “I have not looked at this work for over 30 years but as I revisit it today, it brings back memories of how even the U.S. government agency funding this work believed that our research had the potential of supporting a great need on the continent of Africa.” It was this shared goal of identifying grain amaranth as a sustainable food source under the environmental conditions in West Africa that bonded them for life.

Shepard will travel to Africa on February 9th, 2019, as an honored guest and speaker for Ologunde’s inauguration and induction ceremonies. His lifetime commitment to mentorship and advocacy for inclusion of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) within the federal government has prepared him for this moment. His indelible imprint in the life of a young mentee over three decades ago made him deserving of this honor.
