Benzyl benzoate is an ester created from benzoic acid and benzyl alcohol. This compound is denoted by the organic formula C6H5CH2O2CC6H5. It emits a faint sweet balsamic odor. It appears as solid flakes or a viscous liquid. It is present naturally in hyacinth, Narcissus Jonquilla L, dianthus caryophillus, and tuberose flowers. It forms an important component of Tolu balsam and Balsam of Peru.

Manufacturing process includes increasing the density of benzaldehyde in the presence of sodium to form benzyl benzoate. Another method includes using sodium benzoate and benzyl alcohol in the presence of triethylamine or an alkali benzyl oxide.
Benzyl benzoate has applications in fragrance and repellents for mosquitoes, chiggers, and ticks. It forms a part of an inexpensive procedure to treat human scabies. It is also used as a pediculide, acaricide, and scabicide in veterinary hospitals. Other uses include asthma drugs, whooping cough syrup, plasticizer, cellulose derivative solvent, and dye carrier.
Benzyl benzoate dissolves to benzyl alcohol and benzoic acid. Benzyl alcohol is oxidized to benzoic acid. While the benzoic acid combines with glycine to form benzoglycine. It also combines with glucuronic acid to form benzoylglucuronic acid. The conjugates of the composition are eliminated in the urine.

Its uses in medicine include dysentery, diarrhea, pylorospasm, enterospasm, intestinal colic, spastic constipation, spasm of urinary bladder, spasm of seminal vesicles, hypertension, and asthma. It also finds use as a camphor substitute in pediculide and acaricide.
Side-effects of benzyl benzoate include loss of coordination, convulsions, hyperexcitement, ataxia, skin irritation (to those allergic), and respiratory paralysis. The concentration ratio of benzyl benzoate has also resulted in poisoning of animals. Oral doses led to muscular incoordination, salivation, piloerection, progressive paralysis of hind limbs, prostration, violent convulsions, tremors, and dyspnea.
