Imperial Beach Charter School Selected as School Wellness Location

The UC San Diego School of Medicine Center for Community Health School Wellness selected Imperial Beach Charter School to participate in the Physical Education and Physical Activity School Wellness Program last August. The Program is a project of the County of San Diego Health Works program and supports the County’s Live Well San Diego vision for a healthy, safe, and thriving region.

The two year partnership between Imperial Beach Charter and the UC San Diego School Wellness Team includes professional development, materials and supplies, evidence-based curriculum, strategies, and onsite technical assistance for the school. With these various initiatives, the program offers opportunities to increase physical activity and physical education. Since the launch of the initiative, the school has hosted visits with the Wellness Team to conduct assessments, identify strengths and areas for support, and provide staff workshops. This April, the team will start to offer parent education classes on nutrition and wellness.

Elementary schools with this program are able to implement and sustain healthy eating and physical activity policies, systems, and environments that contribute to preventing and reducing childhood obesity. Students can take education classes to learn how to build a healthy plate, how much sugar is hidden in popular beverages, how to calculate sugar content, and tips to reduce sodium intake.

Imperial Beach Charter has benefited tremendously since launching the program, establishing a running club, purchasing SPARK Physical Education kits, and installing new playground equipment. Superintendent Katie McNamara is excited about the program. “South Bay is dedicated to ensuring that our students are healthy and ready to learn. Imperial Beach Charter is committed to this work and we are thrilled the site was selected for this partnership. We thank UC San Diego, the County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency, and Live Well San Diego for their support.”
