Greg Kraut Calls for Additional Hearings to Discuss up to $1 billion of Wasteful Spending

We can reduce wasteful spending by up to $1 billion a year. To accomplish this, we need to immediately hold hearings. I call on the caucus leadership and committee chairs to convene to review all the auditor’s reports before we sell our state down the river

Westport – September 24, 2018 – Westport RTM Member and State Representative candidate Greg Kraut (R-136) today stated “The time is up for complacency, we can reduce wasteful spending by up to $1 billion a year. To accomplish this, we need to immediately hold additional hearings. I call on the caucus leadership and committee chairs to convene to review all the auditor’s reports before we sell our state down the river.”

The findings in agency audit reports:

• Benefit payments to dead people.
• Abuse of overtime.
• Abuse of comp and vacation time.
• Excessive revisions to purchase orders without appropriate approvals
• Agency decisions that violate both state policy and union contracts.
• Unauthorized payouts for remaining comp time.
• Lost or stolen state property.
• Unauthorized rehiring of retired state employees
• Lacking internal audits
• Massive financial reporting errors
• Lack of program review

One of the recommendations by the Commission on Fiscal Stability and Economic Growth is to create a cost management initiative that will produce a cost savings of up to $1billion annually.

“Government officials assured us that we had reduced our expenses as much as possible. I found that as believable as thinking that implementing two of the largest income tax hikes in the last eight years will turn around the moving vans,” Kraut said.

“The state government is not only severely mismanaged, but the extent of the mismanagement even shocks me,” Kraut said.
