The global ginger production was estimated at 2,479 thousand tonnes in 2015, which was 184 thousand tonnes (or 8%) more than in 2014.
The harvested area of ginger was relatively stable from 2007 to 2010; however, it fluctuated over the next two years. From 2013 to 2015 the amount of harvested area saw a steady increase. It ultimately showed a positive trend with an average annual increase of +3.9%. In 2010, the yield sharply dropped and stabilized at a new level. In 2015, the yield accounted for 85,773 Hg/Ha.
According to market research conducted by IndexBox, the countries with the largest production in absolute volumes on the global ginger market in 2015 was India (800 thousand tonnes), followed by China (552 thousand tonnes), Indonesia (269 thousand tonnes) Nepal (245 thousand tonnes) and Nigeria (203 thousand tonnes).
The most notable growth rate in ginger production among the main producing countries from 2007 to 2015 was attained by India (+9.3% per year), while the other four global leaders (China, Indonesia, Nepal and Nigeria) experienced more modest paces of growth. 45% of the increase in global ginger production between 2007 and 2015 was attained by India, against 25% of the increase attributed to China.
