Abstract
Global date production was estimated at 9,826 million USD in 2015, an increase of 766 million USD (or 8%) than recorded in 2014, and 1,174 million USD (or 11%) less than the peak production level registered in 2010. In physical terms, production reached 7,846 thousand tonnes, an increase of 3% against the previous year. From 2007 to 2015, the production of dates flourished, with an average annual rate of growth of +4.8% per year.
The date area harvested increased steadily from 2012 to 2015, following the 14% decline seen in 2011, finally amounting to 1,161 thousand ha in 2015.
In 2011, the date yield surged by 11%, and then levelled off, with only mild fluctuations over the next four years. In 2015, it stood at 67.6 thousand hg/ha.
According to market research conducted by IndexBox, The countries with the largest production of dates in absolute volumes were Egypt (1,463 thousand tonnes), Iran (1,201 thousand tonnes), Algeria (996 thousand tonnes), Saudi Arabia (810 thousand tonnes) and Iraq (691 thousand tonnes).
The most notable rates of growth in terms of date production amongst the main producing countries from 2007 to 2015 was attained by Algeria (+8.3% per year), followed by Iraq (+6.1%), while the other global leaders (Iran and Egypt) experienced more modest paces of growth.
