Confessions, opening in July, could be inspired by Pope Francis

Robert Ando directs the ‘metaphysical whodunit’

Roberto Andò’s The Confession will get a U.S release this July from Uncork’d Entertainment.

Connie Nielsen, Toni Servillo (Gomorrah), Daniel Auteuil (Jean de Florette), and Lambert Wilson (The Matrix Reloaded) star in the film, described as a metaphysical whodunit. The theatrical season kicks off nationwide from July 7.

A G8 meeting is being held at a luxury hotel on the German coast. The world’s most powerful economists are gathered to enact important provisions that will deeply influence the world economy. One of the guests is a mysterious Italian monk, invited by Daniel Roché, the director of the International Monetary Fund. He wants the monk to receive his confession, that night, in secret. The next morning, Roché is found dead…

In a recent interview, Ando was asked whether the character of the priest (Servillo) in the film was based on Pope Francis.

“It’s interesting because we just came back from Argentina [where the film screened at Semana de Cine Italiano in Buenos Aires], and people were crazy about the movie, I think because it’s a place where all these kinds of problems are really evident, but also because of the influence of the pope”, explains the filmmaker in the interview with Variety. “What I think is that the pope is an isolated man in the church. He is not the church, he is a stranger. The ideology — although it’s not really an ideology — of Franciscanism is taking care of something in a different way. For me, this is really the solution. In our world, we have arrived at a moment in which capitalism is not working any more. We have to deal from the standpoint of how to start again. This is the moment in which we live. ISIS is also a face of that, I think. … We have had 15 years of neoliberalism, and this is the real politics all over the world. There are no differences in all of Europe, leaders all speak about austerity.”

The Confession opens July 7.
