COFFEE & CODED, A Place for Women Looking for Coding and Community, Announces Beginners Workshops in Web Development

May 25, 2018 – There’s never been a better time for women to make their mark in technology. The momentum behind initiatives to increase the representation of women in the tech space continues to grow with 932 women-founded startups in the Crunchbase database in 2016, compared to just 176 in 2009.  COFFEE & CODED is pushing that momentum forward with a series of beginners coding classes that will inspire girls and women to code, create, and challenge assumptions.

COFFEE & CODED offers coding classes in several scripting languages, as well as leadership, resume workshops, career insights and more. The classes are ideal for beginners, would-be entrepreneurs, and women in education and technology in general. The venture works with local talent and tech professionals, and also partners with co-working and event spaces to offer engaging classes and workshops. People of all gender expressions, sexes, backgrounds, age groups, abilities, etc., are welcome to attend.

Our vision includes not only building skills, but building a community. It’s my goal to let the women know they deserve to be in the room, because they’ve earned it,” says Maya Brooks, Founder, COFFEE & CODED.

Founded in 2018, COFFEE & CODED was born from the personal challenges faced by founder Maya Brooks. After graduating from New York University in 2015 with a degree in Economics and Business Studies, Maya’s career trajectory was clear, until she caught the entrepreneurial bug and set her sights on designing her own mobile application. By early 2017, Maya had skills in six computer languages, gained traction as a freelancer, and started teaching courses at General Assembly.

Still, for Maya, the lack of female tech instructors, mentors, and leaders was still prevalent. This is an industry wide issue as statistics reveal that 48 percent of women find lack of female mentors a barrier, and 42 percent consider lack of female role models a hurdle. Through COFFEE & CODED, Maya hopes to create a community where she can teach, inspire, and train future female tech leaders.

I started COFFEE & CODED not only to expose more women and girls to a career path that is accessible to them, but also to provide a model for female leadership in tech,” says Maya Brooks.
