The global trade in butter amounted to 6,742 million USD in 2015, fluctuating wildly over the period under review. A significant drop in 2009 was followed by a recovery over the next two years, until exports decreased again. Overall, there was an annual increase of 3.1% from 2007 to 2015. <\/p>\n

New Zealand remained far ahead other suppliers of butter in 2015, with butter exports totaling 1638 million USD. This accounted for a 24% share in terms of global exports. The Netherlands, Ireland, Germany, and Belgium were the other key global suppliers of butter in 2015, with a 42% combined share of global exports. <\/p>\n

New Zealand (+8.1% per year) and the Netherlands (+6.8% per year) were the fastest growing exporters from 2007 to 2015. New Zealand significantly strengthened its position in the global export structure, growing its share from 17% in 2007 to 24% in 2015. <\/p>\n

On the other hand, France (11%, based on value terms), Germany (8%), Belgium (8%), the Netherlands (7%), and the UK (6%) were the leading destinations of butter imports in 2015. Imports to the Netherlands grew at a quick pace of +7.1% per year from 2007 to 2015. By contrast, Germany significantly contracted its imports of butter over the same period. The Netherlands grew its share of global imports by +2 percentage points, while the remainder of the major importers saw a decline in their import shares.<\/p>\n
