Start With the Slurry, Not Just the Material Name

High-chrome cast iron is often considered for abrasive slurry applications, but the words “high chrome” do not specify a complete material grade.

A pump handling fine mineral particles may have a different wear pattern from one exposed to coarse, angular solids. Impact, corrosion, solids concentration and operating conditions all matter. A very hard but brittle alloy may perform poorly where impact or cracking is the main failure mode.

For abrasion-resistant white cast irons, ASTM A532/A532M defines material classes, chemical composition requirements and hardness testing. It gives buyers and foundries a more useful reference than a generic request for “high-chrome impellers”.

The Hydraulic Institute also explains why material selection for slurry service must balance hardness, toughness and corrosion resistance. Hardness alone is not a service-life guarantee.

Before requesting a quotation, confirm the specified alloy, applicable standard, heat-treatment condition and any special inspection requirements. If the original part has failed unusually quickly, describe the wear or fracture pattern as well.

2. Check Whether the Drawing Represents the Original Impeller

This is especially important for pump repair companies. A worn impeller is not an accurate manufacturing reference. Vane edges can lose material, hydraulic passages can change shape, and corrosion or wear around the bore may hide the original design.

If an OEM drawing is available, use it as the primary reference. If only a physical sample is available, the buyer and supplier need to agree which features can be measured reliably and which dimensions must be reconstructed or confirmed.

Pay particular attention to overall impeller diameter, vane arrangement, inlet geometry, hub dimensions, shaft connection and clearances to nearby pump parts. Copying every dimension from a worn sample can reproduce the same wear damage in a new casting.

3. Review Casting and CNC Machining Together

The casting is only one stage of the finished impeller. Depending on the design, the shaft bore, mounting faces, hub and other functional surfaces may require CNC machining.

The foundry must provide enough machining stock to clean up these features and reach the finished drawing. Too little allowance risks unmachined patches or an incorrect bore location; too much adds unnecessary metal, cutting time and tool wear—particularly with hard wear-resistant alloys.

Concept illustration: a rough impeller casting compared with a finished machined impeller. Surfaces and dimensions are not inspection evidence.

The machining route matters. Before tooling, the team should identify where the rough casting will be located and clamped, which features form the initial datums, and which surfaces need the tightest control.

We discuss this in more detail in our technical article on casting machining allowance. For buyers with an established machine shop, a rough casting with agreed stock may be appropriate. Other buyers may prefer a fully machined component. Both cases must be quoted on a clearly defined delivery basis.

4. Set Inspection Requirements According to the Failure Risks

Not every impeller requires the same inspection plan. Visual inspection alone cannot confirm alloy composition, internal soundness or a finished shaft-bore tolerance. A hardness result by itself does not prove that the complete part meets all requirements.

A project may need material analysis, hardness tests, dimensional inspection, and suitable non-destructive examination. For a rotating component, concentricity or dynamic balancing may also matter. Buyers should state the acceptance criteria and clarify whether balancing is included in the supplier’s scope.

For a new tooling project or supplier change, a first-article review can confirm that both the rough casting and the machined part meet agreed requirements. The inspection scope should be defined before production, not added after the first batch is complete.

5. Compare the Finished Part Cost, Not Just the Casting Price

A low rough-casting price does not always produce a low finished-part cost. Buyers may still need to account for heat treatment, CNC machining, inspection, transport and possible rework.

Tooling costs matter too. A regularly reordered impeller is a different purchasing decision from a single emergency replacement. Compare suppliers on the same specification and delivery condition.

Required material grade and applicable standard

Casting, heat treatment and machining scope

Inspection plan and balancing requirements where applicable

Tooling cost, batch quantity and estimated annual demand

Supply condition, packing and delivery terms

For a closer look at how to compare these supply options, see our article on rough castings versus fully machined castings.

Where SIMIS Can Support Pump and Mining Equipment Buyers

SIMIS supplies custom castings and CNC-machined components for industrial equipment manufacturers, maintenance companies and OEM buyers.
