Made up of students majoring in dance, ideological and political education, and psychology, this young team draws on the university’s academic strengths to dig deep into the three-hundred-year history and cultural lineage of Yingge Dance and the patriotic spirit it carries, building a campus curriculum that young people can experience, perform and empathise with.

The youth practice team of “Yingge Drums Up the Aspirations of Youth”, South China Normal University

Yingge Dance is far more than a simple festival folk custom. During the Jiajing reign of the Ming Dynasty, coastal residents used Yingge’s “deity parade” as cover for militia training and self-defence, fighting alongside government troops against Japanese pirates. During the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, the people of Chaoshan used Yingge processions to pass on intelligence and raise supplies — the drumbeat itself was a silent act of resistance. In modern times, as large numbers of Chaoshan people set out via Hong Kong and Macao for Nanyang (Southeast Asia), Yingge travelled with the overseas Chinese onto foreign soil, while qiaopi remittance letters crossed wind and wave, supporting families at home and at the same time funding the salvation of the motherland. The roots of Yingge are bound tightly to the shared memory of home and country held by fellow countrymen in Chaoshan, Hong Kong, Macao and Nanyang.

During its early surveys and visits to a number of schools in the Pearl River Delta, Hong Kong and Macao, the team identified the right entry points for cultural resonance and explored a new model for spreading Yingge aesthetic education suited to Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao campus settings, revitalising and renewing this intangible cultural heritage along four pathways.

Digging into the meaning of home and country, and repositioning Yingge’s heroic cultural identity in the Greater Bay Area context. Moving beyond a purely regional folk-custom perspective, the team’s young members introduced the historical lineage of Yingge as “China’s war dance” to young people in Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao, helping them build a real understanding of it. In classrooms at ASJ, the team delivered special lectures built around qiaopi artefacts and historical materials, giving Hong Kong and Macao students a direct sense of the overseas Chinese community’s devotion to the motherland.

Team members teaching Yingge culture at the Affiliated School of JNU for Hong Kong and Macao Students (Guangzhou)

Preaching is set aside in favour of an immersive teaching model centred on experience and empathy. In club classes at Aofang Middle School, Hong Kong and Macao teenagers are guided to step into roles within Yingge’s heroic narrative, coming to understand solidarity and responsibility through disciplined, unified formations and steps. Many students who once knew nothing of Yingge’s cultural meaning — and who at first dared not even pick up the Yingge drumsticks — have dared to step into the ranks and found their own heroic bearing in the dance.

Team members teaching Yingge to students of Aofang Middle School and the Affiliated School of JNU for Hong Kong and Macao Students (Guangzhou)

Linking the shared history of overseas Chinese roots across Chaoshan, Hong Kong, Macao and Nanyang, and dissolving the distance of identity. The team uncovered the common historical record of overseas Chinese leaving home through Hong Kong and Macao to make a living abroad, and of qiaopi remittance letters circulating through Hong Kong and Macao to fund the salvation of the motherland, and worked with Hong Kong and Macao overseas-Chinese history resources to run study activities. On that foundation it brings together outstanding teaching resources from within and beyond the university: Professor Wang Haiying and Professor Wang Yibo of the Department of Dance, both researchers in the field of Lingnan dance, guide the theoretical construction and practical development of the curriculum throughout, while Dr. Zhong Ping provides overall guidance for the project. The project has also invited the renowned dancer Chen Qiao and Chen Laifa, a representative inheritor of the national-level intangible cultural heritage item (Puning Yingge), to serve as expert advisers.

The team has built an innovative public-interest loop of “four-party coordinated supply – three-stage implementation – two-way self-renewing inheritance”, working with university experts, intangible cultural heritage inheritors, partner schools in Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao, and public-interest organisations to create a dual-track curriculum spanning online and offline. From curriculum development and classroom teaching to young people giving their own talks and performing on stage, it forms a complete growth pathway for young people: “understand Yingge, perform Yingge, tell the story of Yingge, carry Yingge forward”.

Today, Yingge Dance has not only entered classrooms in Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao but has also gone abroad, touring overseas in London and Paris, showing the world the youthful spirit the “war dance of China” carries. With the power of youth, we hope to take Yingge beyond geography and make it a cultural bond linking young people across Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao, so that love for home and country is carried on from generation to generation, with every rise and fall of the drumsticks.”

About Us:

Lingrong.ltd is dedicated to fueling sustainable global growth for brands worldwide.
