Just a man walking through fog, trying to hold hi

Lewes, Delaware, USA – September 19, 2026 – That’s the premise of John Kauffman’s debut novel, The Valley of The Shadows, and somehow, it’s one of the more affecting fantasy stories to come along in a while.

John drops us into the world of Aki, a traveler moving through a strange, unstable world known as the Shadows. The further in he goes, the more things start to unravel, not just the landscape, but his grip on memory, emotion, and identity. It’s a slow burn, deliberately paced, and it asks more of the reader than most genre fiction does. In return, it gives something most genre fiction doesn’t.

Aki isn’t heroic in any conventional sense. He’s tired. Overwhelmed. Prone to getting lost in his own head for pages at a time. Those stretches, quiet, internal, a little uncomfortable, end up being the heart of the book. The action, when it comes, almost feels secondary.

The supporting cast adds texture without cluttering things. Shei is a rare kind of fictional companion: her closeness to Aki feels genuinely earned rather than written in. Ekati operates less like a villain and more like a persistent anxiety; always there, always pressing. Quasi shows up when the book needs to slow down and think out loud about memory and what we carry with us.

Kauffman’s world-building is restrained in the best way. He’s not trying to out-Tolkien anyone. Fog, ridgelines, hidden valleys, a campfire in the dark, the imagery is simple, but it sticks. The outside world ends up feeling like a direct reflection of whatever Aki is going through internally, which is either a deliberate choice or a happy accident. Either way, it works.

One line repeats throughout the novel: “Every foot I travel is one more. I never have to retreat.” It starts as a mantra and ends as something closer to a prayer. That’s probably the clearest summary of what the whole book is trying to do.

Worth knowing: Kauffman grew up with a speech impediment and came to writing through music. That background doesn’t announce itself in the prose, but it’s there, in the patience of it, in the way he lets silence do some of the work.

The book isn’t fast, and it’s not comfortable. But for readers who’ve ever felt like they were just trying to get through something without losing themselves in the process, it’s going to land. In the best way.

Media Contact
Company Name: John Eric Kauffman
Contact Person: Media Relations
Email: Send Email
Country: United States
Website: https://nyweekly.com/book/a-story-about-grief-isolation-and-trying-to-keep-going/

There’s no chosen one.
