VANCOUVER, B.C. – July 13, 2026 –<\/strong> Rise of the Eco-Tariffists, a comedy short about the Canada-US tariff war, has won a Leo Award for Lead Performance. The film went into the ceremony with three nominations and came out with a win for actor Shayan Bayat.<\/p>\n

The performance that earned it was shot under unusual pressure. Writer and director Scott Renyard filmed the entire 28-page script in one day, with Bayat and co-lead David C. Jones carrying nearly every scene.<\/p>\n

“I’m so thrilled that Shayan (Bayat) won this award. It was such a big ask to perform a 28-page script in one day with his co-lead David C. Jones, but they hung in there with me and we managed to pull it off. And he won a Leo for his performance!” said Renyard.<\/p>\n

The day did not cooperate. The crew had barely set up at a park bench when a screech came from overhead: Great Blue Herons, nesting in the cottonwoods directly above the set, hatchlings and all. The racket forced the production to pack up and move 200 yards. An hour into shooting at the new spot, the trees filled with crows, this time agitated by a raccoon climbing nearby.<\/p>\n

“I began to think we were in the middle of a remake of Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds,” said Scott Renyard.<\/p>\n

Behind the comedy is a serious subject. “US tariffs imposed on Canada and Canada’s retaliatory tariffs have disrupted economies and many lives on both sides of the border, and I wanted to create something that could give all of us a bit of a laugh,” Renyard added. “I hope the film will bring a bit of levity to the situation.”<\/p>\n
