THE COTSWOLDS, UK –<\/strong> The Cotswolds has a crowding problem, and locals are increasingly vocal about it. Villages like Bourton-on-the-Water, population roughly 4,000, now absorb hundreds of thousands of day visitors a year, clogging lanes, straining parking and testing the patience of residents during peak months. Parish councils and local businesses alike have begun debating how to manage the strain without choking off the tourism their economies depend on.<\/p>\n

Yet behind the headlines about coach queues and congestion, a quieter shift is underway. A growing number of visitors are bypassing the day-trip crush entirely by booking private, whole-property stays and spreading their visits across the region and the calendar.<\/p>\n

The timing reflects a wider boom. Tourism contributed £58 billion directly to the UK economy in 2023, supporting 1.2 million jobs, with rural tourism in England accounting for over £13 billion of that figure. And the appetite for travelling in groups is surging: UK searches for multigenerational holidays rose 142% between 2021–22 and 2024–25, while 71% of adults planning a 2025 holiday tried to coordinate their dates with friends or family.<\/p>\n

That approach is reshaping demand. Rather than funnelling into the same few honeypots, group travellers are spreading out across market towns and quieter bases: Burford<\/a> at the southern gateway, Chipping Norton<\/a> to the north, Cirencester<\/a> to the west, and even Bourton-on-the-Water<\/a> itself, where staying overnight means enjoying the famous river walk in the early morning calm, long after the coaches have left.<\/p>\n

The economics help explain the trend. With 84% of UK consumers taking a holiday in 2025, the highest level since before the pandemic, and household budgets still squeezed, a property split between ten or twelve people often costs less per head than a mid-range hotel room, while keeping the whole group together under one roof. For many families, it is the only way three generations can holiday together at all.<\/p>\n

Industry data supports the direction of travel: 30–40% of UK staycationers now holiday as an extended family or large group, and properties sleeping six or more are showing stronger occupancy resilience than smaller units across rural regions.<\/p>\n
