Based in New York and currently working as a graphic designer on the branding team at the New York office of global design studio 2×4, much of Tan’s work centers on a simple but specific niche: taking “unrefined” or “ugly” references and turning them into intentional, structured design.

Born in Malaysia and raised in Thailand, Tan holds Singaporean nationality, and her multicultural background in Southeast Asia exposed her to diverse visual environments that often fall outside the bounds of conventional Western “good taste.” After moving to New York to earn a BFA in Communication Design from Parsons School of Design, she has been working as a graphic designer at the studio 2×4.

Tan’s work is not focused on refinement in a traditional sense, but on clarity and intent. She often works with references that fall outside conventional definitions of “good taste,” using typography and layout to organize and reframe them. Rather than removing irregularities, she treats them as material to work with, emphasizing structure and legibility over polish, offering an alternative to more standardized approaches in contemporary branding.

An example of this perspective is her project Voice Print, which won an American Design Award issued by GDUSA (Graphic Design USA) for its unique approach to visualizing speech in a book design. “Voice Print is a book about the way we speak, and celebrating our “disfluencies” as part of our identity.” she says.

Rather than seeing a stutter as a mistake, Tan saw it as a rhythmic pattern. By mapping the timing of people’s speech, she created a typographic system that treated these vocal “glitches” as a musical score. Instead of correcting or smoothing these disruptions, the system records them as part of a visual structure. Inspired by JJJJJerome Ellis, Tan took a melismatic approach to speech, which typically refers to singing multiple notes per syllable. When recorded into a spectrogram, disfluency in speech is identical to melismatic singing. “What if we could use voiceprints to destigmatize stuttering?” she says. The project remains a core example of her interest to reframe something seen as “unrefined”.

Tan collaborates with a range of high-profile studios. At 2×4, Tan works on graphic design and branding projects for clients such as Chanel and Miu Miu, where she translates her research, explorations, and distinct design language to luxury brands. Before joining 2×4, Tan worked with a range of different design studios such as Wkshps, Synoptic Office, Abrams Brooks, and fashion label Dion Lee as an in-house graphic designer. Her background includes applying her graphic design approach to brand identity, publication, and web projects for cultural and commercial clients, and applying graphic design within a fashion label context.

Whether in fashion, publishing, or institutional branding, Tan views her creative work as an innovative way to explore what we value visually. Isabelle Tan’s work is a consistent process to transform overlooked visual references into work that is structured, intentional, and culturally resonant.

She continues to adapt to different visual and editorial systems while maintaining a consistent approach. Rather than adhering to a fixed aesthetic, Tan maintains a clear point of view while adapting to different visual systems, showing how even the most “ordinary” references are elevated into something thoughtful, compelling, and impactful. We look forward to seeing much more of Tan’s unique graphic designs as she continues to work on cutting edge projects at 2×4 in New York.

Media Contact
Company Name: Isabelle Tan
Contact Person: Isabelle Tan
Email: Send Email
City: New York
Country: United States
Website: https://isabtan.com/

NEW YORK – For graphic designer Isabelle Tan, the most interesting visual ideas often come from the things people usually ignore.
