The main takeaway: companies are moving from single AI helpers to groups of coordinated agents, but many agents still don’t talk to each other.

According to the Futurum Group’s “1H 2026 Enterprise Software Decision Maker Survey Report,” the number of global IT decision-makers who said Autonomous Agents and Agentic AI were a top technology priority went from 13.0% to 17.1% in a year, a 31.5% increase. Companies are now using agents in cybersecurity, sales, marketing, customer service, and managing their supply chains.

“In 2025, everyone talked about AI agents. In 2026, they’re actually using them,” said Dmitry Baraishuk, Partner and Chief Innovation Officer at Belitsoft. “But we found that half of all agents run on their own without connecting to other agents. That limits what they can do.”

What the Data Shows

From helpers to teams

IDC’s FutureScape 2026 states that by 2030, 80% of developers will work with AI agents that can do things on their own. According to Anthropic’s 2026 Agentic Coding Trends Report, developers use AI for about 60% of their work, but they can only fully hand off 0-20% of their tasks. People still need to check and guide the AI.

Multiple agents working together is now the goal

Gartner says that specialized agents are “like musicians in an orchestra.” MCP (Model Context Protocol), A2A (Agent-to-Agent), and ACP (Agent Communication Protocol) are all standard ways for agents to talk to each other and share information. However, Salesforce’s 2026 Connectivity Benchmark Report found that the average company runs 12 AI agents (expected to reach 20 by 2027), but 50% of those agents operate completely on their own.

More agents are going into real work

According to the Futurum Group survey, companies plan to use agentic AI in cybersecurity (58.7%), sales, marketing, and service (51.3%), and supply chain management (47.8%). Just 11% of the intended agentic use cases from the previous year actually went into production, despite the fact that 71% of businesses claim to deploy AI agents. Concerns about risk, a lack of internal AI expertise, outdated systems that are incompatible with modern ones, and dispersed data storage are the main issues.

Agent pipelines become part of DevOps

Using straightforward description languages, teams are already creating sequences of AI agents that each perform a single task. According to analysts, 65% of businesses will include AI agents directly into their security and DevOps pipelines by 2030.

Tests that fix themselves

When a button or menu changes on a website, AI can now detect the change, update the test script, and remove the “flaky” failures that used to waste time. Rakuten engineers used an AI coding tool to add a new feature to vLLM, which has 12.5 million lines of code. It took the AI seven hours to finish the job, and it was 99.9% accurate.

Standards and oversight are catching up

Several competing communication methods are in use: Agent Network Protocol (ANP), Agent Communication Protocol (ACP), Model Context Protocol (MCP), and Agent‑to‑Agent (A2A). These let agents find each other, send messages, and work together without a human directing every step.

Companies are also spending more on tracking and governing their agents. By 2027, if a company hasn’t prepared high‑quality data for AI, it could see productivity drop by up to 15% because of AI mistakes and false information.

People go from writing code to being in charge of agents

Engineers are spending less time writing code and more time telling agents what to make, checking the results, and figuring out how to build the whole system. In 2026, the best developers won’t be the ones who can write code faster than AI. They will be able to ask for what they need, find problems, and know when to trust their own judgment instead of what the AI says.

What Comes Next

2026 is the year AI agents start taking on real work from beginning to end. The technology works, the costs are reasonable, and businesses are putting rules in place to control it.

Still, we are in a building phase. Most companies will take until 2028 to get agent applications ready for large‑scale use. True “agent‑first” systems are probably three to five years away. The winners will not be the companies with the most agents – they will be the ones that get their agents to work together and keep humans involved where it matters.

About the Author:

Dmitry Baraishuk is a Partner and Chief Innovation Officer at Belitsoft.
