PHOENIX, AZ – Aug 26, 2025 – Award-winning travel memoirist Cory Mortensen—known for his bestselling books The Buddha and the Bee and Embracing Bewilderment—returns with Middle Miles: Cycling from Canada to Mexico Along the Pacific Coast Highway, a reflective, often funny account of one man’s 27-day, 1,850-mile journey along the length of the West Coast.

Middle Miles has already earned critical acclaim from Kirkus Reviews, which calls it “a poignant, engaging, often humorous account about a Pacific Coast journey to the Mexican border.”

In the summer of 2023, at 53 years old, Mortensen set out from Peace Arch Park on the U.S.–Canada border and pedaled all the way to Tijuana, weaving together day-by-day storytelling with historical insights, cultural observations, and philosophical reflections. From the misty bluffs of Washington to California’s sun-soaked beaches, the memoir celebrates Americana in all its forms—majestic landscapes, roadside diners, chance encounters, and the unexpected kindness of strangers.

Kirkus notes Mortensen’s “sheer joie de vivre” and his ability to balance humor with thoughtful commentary, tackling subjects as varied as the erasure of Indigenous history, the quirks of small-town life, and the realities of aging with intention. Readers will meet colorful characters, from lifelong friends to strangers in need, and share in the author’s belief that “life is best lived through experiences rather than possessions.”

Featuring full-color photographs, maps, and candid moments of self-discovery, Middle Miles is not a technical cycling manual—it’s a celebration of the unapologetic wanderer’s spirit, a testament to curiosity, resilience, and finding meaning on the open road.

Middle Miles will be available June 5, 2025, in hardcover, paperback, and e-book formats from major booksellers.https://www.thebuddhaandthebee.com
